Unique Family Gift Idea: Arts and Crafts

An Arts and Crafts Package as a Unique Gift Idea for the Whole Family

Regarding buying gifts in general, and unique family gifts in particular: As a parent, it is important to me to buy for my kids (and my nephews and nieces and other loved ones), presents which are educational, or have some other positive character trait virtue. And not just something which is entertaining. True, it is impossible to live a normal life without seeing to it that the children are well entertained. And there are many easy outlets, like sitting them in front of a computer or a TV. But personally I try to strengthen myself not to be lazy and to find for them activity which is educational and character building.

Into the picture steps Arts and Crafts. Wonderful for children, (and for adults who are willing to teach themselves this topic). It is educational and develops creativity, and it is relatively cheap. Raw materials are things which are anyway found around the house, like paper, cardboard, egg cartons, string, boxes, crayons, paint, glue, baby jars, toilet paper and paper towel rolls, and so forth.

Even though arts and crafts is a fantastic activity, I imagine that most households have not organized themselves for this creative and positive fulfilling venture. Therefore I recommend it as a cheap and valuable unique children’s gift. Google "Arts and Crafts for Children" and in the first ten responses you will find zillions of great ideas for activities. My suggestion to you is to put together the raw materials for a number of projects, and print the instructions, and then package it nicely (this is no less important then the rest), and Presto! You have yourself a great inexpensive present that will be appreciated by your kids, or your grandchildren, or your nieces and nephews. It will develop their creativity, and keep them busy for hours each project. Try to include at least one project which doesn’t have all of the instructions given, in order to leave it to the child to complete it how he understands.

You will teach the children about art and about themselves, and maybe even teach the parents about parenting lol.

Enjoy!

A Unique Baby Gift for a Unique Soul

Boruch Rappaport Recommends a Unique Baby Gift

My first recommendation for a genuine unique baby gift is that which is dearest to my heart, that which I personally specialize in, (even though it is not my intention to use this blog as my sales page per se).

I sell items of Judaica, this is my expertise to a certain extent, and it occurs to me to offer an item which is a great idea for a baby gift (for whom it is applicable, this is obviously not for everyone) — a quality Mezuza.

The Mezuza, rolling it up properly and attaching it to the doorpost of the house and of each room (on the right side going in)  is one of the Divine Commandments (See Dvarim (Deut.) chapter 6 verse 9) which unfortunately not everyone does, or which not everyone does correctly. This is partially because the market is flooded with low quality cheap mezuzas, or worse, non-kosher mezuzas.

It is well known by many that one of the by-products, one of the rewards (sort of) of Mezuza observance is a certain Divine Protection over those in the house (or the room). Not that a person should actually fulfill the commandment specifically for this reason (see my article Here). Still it is true, and it will be appreciated in this light.

The parents express their natural genuine love for the baby by doing everything in their power to protect him/her: Just the right temperature, just the right clothes, just the right food, and toys. Consider completing the effort by contributing something that will serve his Spiritual welfare.

Birthday Gifts: Toys

Birthday Gift Toy Guide

I read an article on the net recently about a man who was asked to work on a Guide to the Best Toys for birthday gift ideas. When I saw the proposition I looked up from screen and started contemplating — wow, what a big chunk he is biting off. If you think about it, by what yardstick would you rate toys? On the one hand you can look for the most unique and unusual, or no, would you go for the best selling, or the most educational? Would you rate the classic toys higher because they have withstood the test of time, or would you say that the tech toys are inherently better because they are currently selling better?

I put my eyes back onto the screen and kept reading.

One of the things that caught my eye right away (even though it wasn’t the first paragraph) is that the author discovered that collectors are an excellent source of information about the best toys. At first thought, one would assume that collectors collect things because of their esoteric value and rarity, but after researching the matter it turns out that they really know what they are talking about. If I may quote, "Some tin toys, for example, go back decades, but are still as entertaining as ever. Robotic windup cars can be more fun than radio controlled cars for some people, and if something goes wrong with them they are easier to fix."

Still, it seems to me that one doesn’t have to ignore the value of the modern day electronic toys. Some of the high-tech toys are some of the best that were ever invented. Virtual pets, radio controlled vehicles, video game systems, toy robots, are some of the gadgets that have made our lives more entertaining. Many are very educational and stimulate creativity. Many parents wouldn’t relate to sound recording software as a toy, or digital cameras and digital photo editing software, but many teenagers consider these to be great toys.

I agree with the author’s motivation for accepting the assignment — that a good toy guide is really important, and for many reasons. A lot of the times, parents don’t know what to get their children for presents. The right educational toy at the right time, especially on a birthday, can inspire a child, and make a huge world of difference. A kite might not seem like much, but it can be a great way to bring a family together and give the children the special attention that they so need. An electronics projects kit might not be as high tech as the latest video game system, but it can help kids understand how things work and inspire passion for a high-technology career. The best toys inherently should both amuse and also inspire.
